history
Devi was born into a middle class Hispanic family in an unnamed western city. Her mother died when she was very young, leaving her with her less then prepared father to raise her. Devi's life was never really normal, in grade school she accidentally killed an asthmatic schoolmate after breathing chalk into his face. Devi started dating at 16, one of her first outings ending just as badly. Her date Eddie had crashed them into a tree and after a mongoose stole his brain, he pressured Devi for sex, his last words being, "Are you sitting on my face?" before he suffocated on the blown airbag. Devi's relationship issues continued throughout her high school years and into her adult life.
She was a clubber goth in her early twenties with knack for socializing and sometimes dating the weirdest people. Her next major delve into the dating world let her out to a movie and dinner with a guy who eventually ate the waiters brain. You can see where she'd become paranoid. Her last shot at dating was what drove her to being a hermit. She had gone out with a guy who had been stalking her sweetly at the bookstore, Johnny C. At the end of the night, he tried to murder her. After she karate kicked him in the face and ran away screaming, she hid in her apartment. Two weeks of screening calls from Johnny of heavy breathing, Devi worked up the courage to answer the phone, only to be greeting to the sound of a gun firing. This only caused her to withdraw more. Eventually, she was forced back outside in order to pay her rent. Socially, she only went out after that with Tenna and only if Tenna pressured her into it usually using the line, "You need to get out more."
Devi's last bookstore job is what lead to her being hired by NERVE. One of their story writers came in and saw Devi's doodles on the back of order forms and offered her a job drawing print covers for short science fiction stories. Since Devi was a slave to her art, it seemed like the perfect job and came with a decent paycheck to boot.
It was perfect, until the daily grind of incessant changes to half completed artwork, demands by the publisher and writer to change changes that she'd only just started, and the lack of time she had for her personal art became too much. Because she had no time to focus on her own works, something that had taken root in her head after the death of Johnny consumed the creative energy that she couldn't expend and started getting stronger.
The supernatural parasite took hold of one of Devi's pictures, one of a little doll, and started 'finishing' it so it could have a corporeal form. This creature, named Sickness by Devi herself, influenced the world around Devi. Electrical shocks and delays in time that cost her the chance to do her own art.
