artistwithasickness
Canon: I feel Sick - Major Character | JTHM - Minor Character
Canon point: A year or so past end of issue 2
Age: Roughly 23
Reference: I feel Sick | JTHM
Personality: Devi D is a sarcastic cynic that has nearly mastered the art of pretending to be nice while silently complaining about the Man. Having been a wage slave, or what we would call customer service rep, for more than enough years to be as polite and accommodating as the situation calls for with a smile, no matter what exaggerated, sometimes creatively violent thoughts go through her head. Devi uses this unwanted skill as personal, emotional protection. Her insecurities and fears are tucked behind her sarcasm and sharp apathy and while she's capable of outputting that shiny Customer Service exterior, she rarely does. Exceptions to that rule most normally includes when she's trying to get or keep herself out of trouble.
Wholly capable of being a 'nice' person, Devi tends to find the rest of humanity dull and hardly worth her time. As the people of her world are exactly and dramatically dull, when Devi finds something new or interesting, she becomes almost childlike in her eager enthusiasm and relentless curiosity. Since this doesn't happen often, it's a rarely seen side of her but most apparent when she gets to talking about her passion of art. The more commonly seen side is that of a slightly aloof and disillusioned woman, who's been taught by the world that life isn't 'nice'.
A well trained paranoia and alertness lends Devi to remaining aloof and hopefully 'untouchable'; a direct result of a slew of disastrous relationships and the attempt on her life from her last almost boyfriend. While this prompted her to hide away in the safety of her apartment, she learned that she couldn't stay indoors and 'safe' forever. Armed with the determination to never be a victim or 'weak' again, the natural confidence that Devi carries with her is backed by a lot of hours in the dojo, and a sharp tongue that she uses to drive people that bother her away.
When in a good mood, Devi can be quite funny (or at least she thinks so) and being a generally intelligent person, she can carry on a conversation well. Having been a shut in most of her life, Devi's still got a lot of rough edges and tends to speak her mind openly and without a lot of forethought unless it's something important, using creative language to get her points across. Emphatic about things that strike her nerves or things she cares about, Devi can be just as lively and feisty as she is unapproachable and apathetic.
Skills and attributes: Nothing extraordinary - Devi does hold a brown belt in mixed martial arts.
First person sample: Link
Third person sample:Not being a drinker or one who partied until they blacked out, waking up in a new and unfamiliar place was, needless to say, startling. As soon as her eyes opened, Devi was up on her feet and alert. Confused, but alert. The calm, unwavering eyes of the old woman was a little unnerving, but as she spoke and the information she gave settled, that sensation left.
Well, she couldn’t shoot the messenger.
"'Serve some purpose' sounds an awful lot like an open ended noose of a deal, if you ask me." Sickness would have her 'serve some purpose' too, but at least these people brought warm sticky air that confirmed she wasn’t any place near San Jose anymore. Not wanting to look like a total ass, Devi didn’t repeat the questions that the woman’s answers hadn’t seemed to satisfy. Island. Gods. Right.
"And to think, I gave up church and praying all those years ago." With nothing to gain by railing against the old woman, Devi sighed, stuck her hands in the pockets of her cargo pants and headed for the door. Might as well see if anything else on the island would do a better job of sating her paranoid curiosity.
